New York loves nothing so much as a good scandal. Greene was arrested in December after police found a cache of shotguns, bomb-making literature and several grams of a potent explosive known as HMTD in the Greenwich Village apartment he shared with his girlfriend, Morgan Gliedman, Police say Greene planned to blow up the arch in Washington Square Park. Greene and Gliedman, who was nine months pregnant at the time of her arrest, are both heroin addicts. They are also both children of the New York Jewish elite. In the papers, Greene and Gliedman come off as rich-kid junkies with a fetish for weapons: Sid and Nancy meet the Weathermen , only a few decades late on both counts.
Inside their Greenwich Village apartment, a young couple spent December preparing for a baby. Morgan Gliedman, 27, the daughter of a prominent New York City oncologist, was nine months pregnant, and her boyfriend, Aaron Greene, 31, son of the president of an acclaimed artwork-restoration business, was excited about the birth of his first child, a relative said. They confiscated seven grams of a chemical called hexamethylene triperoxide diamine, or HMTD, an explosive.

This article is from the archive of our partner. Except that today she's the subject of New York Post pulp for her alleged bomb-making skills. The case really does have all the makings of a tabloid reporter's dream: a super-privileged mom-to-be, living in one of the cushiest neighborhoods in Manhattan, apparently devising bombs with her OWS boyfriend. What Gliedman and Greene were allegedly up to, of course, would be pretty terrifying no matter what neighborhood what they were doing it in. This HMTD is pretty scary stuff, even given the history of false reporting on white powder and alleged terrorists. Here's what an explosion of five grams of HMTD reportedly looks like:.
Aaron Greene is sitting in a white plastic chair in a visiting room at Rikers Island prison. He is lantern-jawed and handsome, with several days of stubble, his long, shaggy brown hair parted down the middle. Including right now. Six weeks earlier, acting on a tip, police had raided a Village apartment on 9th Street, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, where the year-old Greene was living with his year-old girlfriend, Morgan Gliedman. But what concerned the police most—and caused them to evacuate much of the block for several hours on a snowy Saturday morning—was a plastic container with an explosive powder later determined to be hexamethylene triperoxide diamine, or HMTD—the same substance believed to have been used in the London mass-transit bombings. Greene was initially thought to be an Occupy Wall Street activist.
