Frank and the Giant (We Both Read - Level K-1) by Dev RossI was really excited when my son and I found this book at the library. Anything that encourages him to read gets 5 stars in my book. The story is ultimately about perception which is quite cute at the end. While I absolutely love the idea of reading together, I didnt really feel like he was reading or being challenged to read. Asking him to read the word, chair in large letters under a giant picture of a chair was a bit of a giveaway. In other words, he wasnt reading the word, he was looking at the picture. I kept reminding myself, however, that some reading specialist out there would probably tell me this is part of the process and theyre probably right. I think it did more for his confidence than mine and ultimately that is what matters and what were hoping to build in him. We will try more in the series and see how it goes.
Too Many Cats: Level K (We Both Read Series)
The We Both Read books are designed to engage children and parents in reading together. The concept of the series is simple: each book is specially formatted for a parent and child to take turns reading aloud alternate pages. The parent's pages feature higher level text, while the child's pages feature text that matches the child's reading level. Children get to practice reading at their skill level and they also have the opportunity to relax and listen as the fluent reading of more complex text is modeled for them. The result is increased comprehension, fluency, and support for their decoding skills, along with increased enthusiasm for reading. Independent research has shown that use of the We Both Read series significantly increases in reading scores. It is no surprise that this series has been adopted by thousands of schools for buddy reading and teacher-student close reading.
