A Long Way From Home by Peter Carey

Irene Bobs loves fast driving. Her husband is the best car salesman in rural south eastern Australia. Together with Willie, their lanky navigator, they embark upon the Redex Trial, a brutal race around the continent, over roads no car will ever quite survive.

A Long Way from Home is Peter Careys late style masterpiece; a thrilling high speed story that starts in one way, then takes you to another place altogether. Set in the 1950s in the embers of the British Empire, painting a picture of Queen and subject, black, white and those in-between, this brilliantly vivid novel illustrates how the possession of an ancient culture spirals through history - and the love made and hurt caused along the way.

Shooter Jennings - I'm A Long Way From Home

A novel whose powerful ambience, sly humour and slew of memorable characters are impressive on their own terms. Does a non-Aboriginal author even have the right to tell stories steeped in Indigenous suffering? Irene is a hot-shot driver and Titch a master of publicity; needing a reliable navigator, they team up with their neighbour Willie Bachhuber, a teacher, of German Lutheran parentage, who happens to be passionate about maps.

A Long Way From Home

The new novel from double Booker winner Peter Carey is built around the annual Redex Reliability trials in s Australia, in which competitors had to sustain a certain average speed between stops or they lost points. The event became a contest between Fords and the Holdens manufactured by General Motors. It made heroes out of the drivers, who had to cover 10, miles around the country in 17 days, often on dust roads, through dried-up rivers and via creeks full of water, and above dizzy drops, in danger from flying rocks kicked up by other cars, and from kangaroos jumping into the road in the dark. They made heroines, too: the women who took part as drivers or navigators were often favourites with spectators and in the newspapers. Titch Bobs is the best car salesman in rural Victoria, and enters the trials as a publicity stunt for his new car showroom; he takes along his wife, Irene, mother of their two children.

W riters are by nature chameleons, with each new character a new disguise to take on, a fresh skin to inhabit. The novel is told in alternating first-person voices. Initially, we meet the petite Irene Bobs, a spunkily irrepressible young woman married to the equally diminutive Titch. Titch is genial, slightly useless and lives in fear of his domineering father, Dan. Titch dreams of running the local Ford dealership; after yet another stab in the back from his father, he has to make do with being the Bacchus Marsh representative of General Motors Holden.
