NASA's Million Dollar Space Pen vs The Soviet Pencils
Let me make this plain and clear, I have no problem with folk judging me. Yeah they say only God does the judging. Well I live in the real word whereby folk are not all Godly so I deal with the fact of life. However call it judging or whatever because I hold you accountable and I ask that you hold me accountable. I'm a teacher, blogger, and curriculum writer. I've been teaching science for 12 years at both the middle and high school levels. When I switched from teaching middle school to high school, my new district required all new hires to participate in a new teacher program our first year. Even though I already had 5 years of teaching experience, I took monthly classes with a professional development specialist whose job it was to help navigate teachers through that first year of teaching which we all know is the toughest year! The PD specialist who ran the class and came to observe us was phenomenal. I will be forever grateful for some of the nuggets of wisdom she shared with me. One topic I remember coming up was the issue of students coming to school without paper or pencils.
In one lesson, our focus was on creating a psychologically safe learning environment for students.

Cause I Ain’t Got a Pencil
This year, my first year teaching, has been a whirlwind to say the least. It has been scary-easy to get caught up in the documentation, assessments, administrative expectations, and daily preparation. When my to-do list continues to grow, I lose sight of teaching. I forget that I have daily contact with human beings, many of whom desperately need to be cared for. When the tasks pile up, I get impatient and I lose the joy of my job. I always look forward to the inspirational messages sent by the assistant principal.
