This is my favorite Scottish movie. Not to mention a great score. Well, how can I make a list about movies in Scotland and not include Braveheart? The movie may have questionable history behind it and take much creative license but one thing is clear — this movie IS Scotland.

Asking a movie for historical accuracy is an invitation to disappointment, and flicks set during medieval times have especially bad track records. So it was with some trepidation that we sat down to watch Outlaw King , Netflix's recently released prestige drama starring Chris Pine as Robert the Bruce. You might remember Robert from 's Braveheart, and given that these movies cover the Wars of Scottish Independence nearly back-to-back in the early s, with only some years overlapping, it's impossible not to compare them. This is not a discussion of which movie is better though Braveheart has better pacing and dramatic payoff. Instead, this is a category by category analysis of the essential historic accuracy between the two movies. No matter which biopic wins, the loser will be Andrew de Moray, the Scottish freedom fighter that both movies ignore.

TOP 5: Period Romance Movies

Few countries can match Scotland when it comes to dramatic scenery and our glens and lochs have featured in some of the most successful movies in cinema history. But we're not only used to providing the backdrop; over the years Scotland has produced more than its fair share of acting and directing talent. Alfred Hitchcock's only cinematic venture north of the border produced this classic that is perhaps best remembered for its daring chase sequence across the Forth Bridge. Although its sense of Scottish geography is slightly off as once across the bridge the hero finds himself in the middle of the Highlands! Based on the true story of a wartime ship packed with 50, cases of whisky that ran aground off the Outer Hebrides, Alexander Mackendrick's directorial debut is as funny today as it was over half-a-century ago. The real ship - the SS Politician - ran aground off Eriskay and it is said that one of the estimated , bottles of her whisky is still found by someone on the beach every other year.
