Milk and Honey

H undreds of people , mostly women, gather at the base of a spiral staircase inside an Indigo bookstore in downtown Toronto. They are here to see Rupi Kaur, a twenty-two-year-old poet whose art is ricocheting across the Internet. The crowd quiets as a thrumming sound from the loudspeakers on either side of the stage fills the room, then Kaur, wearing a white dress and her thick black hair coiled on top of her head, begins reciting her poem Broken English. The glaring lights and the noise of people milling about in the hallway of the Manulife Centre clashes with the lilting beauty of her words and the fluid expression of her gestures. But the people filling the seats clutch copies of her book and listen spellbound. When she was three, Kaur emigrated with her mother from Punjab, India, to join her father in Montreal. Since then her family she is the eldest of five children has lived in a dozen places, and only recently settled in Brampton, Ontario.

Book Notes: Where we read and condense books down to their main takeaways for creatives. I have always found it hard to read and take in properly because I have been trained to read so fast that I lose all the rhythm. Then another friend recommended it, and another. The works are very raw and emotional, and while they are mainly about love and heartbreak and dealing with abuse and trauma, I was also struck by how many of the pieces applied directly to art and artists. Rupi talks about her mother putting crayons in her hand as a young child and telling her to make sense of the world by drawing, and all the sketches that accompany the poems are her own.

Not many poets are able to say that Ariana Grande follows them on Instagram. Her debut collection milk and honey , sparse poems about love and loss, abuse and healing — first self-published in while Kaur was still in college — has sold over a million print copies and remained on the New York Times bestseller list for 52 consecutive weeks. Tickets for the London leg of her world tour in spring sold out in less than ten minutes. In July, when Kaur uploaded a series of Instagram posts to announce her forthcoming second poetry collection — the sun and her flowers , to be released on Oct. Like her peers Nayyirah Waheed , Lang Leav , and, to a lesser extent, Warsan Shire whose work is more complex and has received more critical acclaim , Kaur produces bite-size, accessible poems. Their free verse poetry eschews difficult metaphors in favor of clear, plain language, and this accessibility is precisely what has garnered the new wave of " Instapoets " such a large and dedicated following. But in terms of sheer numbers, Kaur remains the most popular — and the most controversial.

Rupi Kaur make me understand what the woman feel when they got sexual harrasment at the first chapter of milk and honey. I suggest you to have and feel the milk and honey before she get bored with her fortune and stop to published. I find that many of us are a little too timid when it comes to voicing our thoughts, feelings, and opinions. I know I should crumble for better reasons but have you seen that boy he brings the sun to its knees every night. I found there were no roots more intimate than those between a mind and body that have decided to be whole.

Her works have been at the forefront of a new genre of social-media-centered genre of short and easily accessible poetry - Instapoetry.
