They found our bearded dragon. They found our turtles. They found our blue-tongued skink. I suggested to the teacher that there might be at least one more living thing in the library and she was suddenly remembered that there is an ivy plant on the bookshelf.
This book is perfect for this class or for any other elementary age students who are talking about what it means to be alive. It has enough meat for even junior high or high school students, and it will definitely get a thoughtful conversation going, no matter the age of the readers.

The world is made up of many different things. Some of the things are living and others are non-living. A dog, swing set, car, tree, flowers, and a book are some of the things that make up the world. There are two different kinds of things in the world. One kind is called living things. Living things eat, breathe, grow, move, reproduce and have senses. The other kind is called nonliving things.
Ecosystems -- biological communities -- include living organisms like animals, plants, insects and bacteria, as well as nonliving components like rocks, soil, water and sunlight. Survival of the living organisms in an ecosystem depends upon their adaptability to both the living and nonliving elements within its community. As a functional unit of nature that includes the community of organisms that grow, reproduce, feed and interact, an ecosystem also includes the nonliving elements of the environment. An ecosystem describes a single environmental and ecological unit or community, whereas a biome, by contrast, tends to be regional and often has several distinct ecosystems within it. An aquatic ocean biome consists of numerous ecosystems like tidal pools, coral reefs and kelp forests. The living creatures in a biological community include microscopic living organisms to all classes and sizes of animals. In a pond, for example, living organisms range in size from the algae and zooplankton in a drop of pond water to the larger fish, amphibians, lilies and cattails that make their homes in the pond.
Others think plants and certain animals are non-living. An everyday example is that students think various lifecycle stages of a butterfly are not alive the eggs and immobile pupae , whereas a caterpillar and butterfly can move and are therefore considered to be alive. The students focus on the activity that takes place within a location. Most students list only vertebrates , particularly mammals as animals. Some children think animals live only on land.
