In the criminal justice system, sexually based offenses are considered especially heinous. The writers of SVU often adapt current events into scripts for the dark, gritty police procedural show that everyone loves to binge watch on Netflix. This episode was based on the physical altercation that took place between pop singer Rihanna and rapper Chris Brown in Brown beat his then-girlfriend, Rihanna, but she continued to date him, despite his violent behavior. Another episode, "Devastating Story," was based on the UVA rape allegations published in Rolling Stone magazine that were later proven to be false. The Episode: A seven-months pregnant woman is found dead, with her child ripped out of her body in a crude Cesarean section. Detectives race to find the missing baby before it is too late.

Plot : After a seven-year-old girl is shot by one of her male classmates, the detectives must track down how the little boy got the gun in the first place. Owens legally couldn't be charged for murder due to his young age and to this day remains the youngest school shooting perpetrator. Plot : After a female prostitute kills a man after he attempts to rape her, the detectives try to prove that she is actually a serial killer. She claimed that the men sexually assaulted her while she was working as a prostitute and that the murders were committed in self-defense. Plot : After a two-year-old girl is reported missing by her grandmother, the daughter's mother played by Hilary Duff! She lies to the police, is photographed partying and buys burial materials during the time her daughter went missing. The reckless party-girl mother comes across to the detectives as super unstable.

"Selfish" (Season 10, Episode 19) seemed to be inspired by the Casey Anthony trial.
