Postcolonial Translation: Theory and Practice by Susan BassnettThis outstanding collection brings together eminent contributors (from Britain, the US, Brazil, India and Canada) to examine crucial interconnections between postcolonial theory and translation studies. Examining the relationships between language and power across cultural boundaries, this collection reveals the vital role of translation in redefining the meanings of culture and ethnic identity. The essay topics include:
* links between centre and margins in intellectual transfer
* shifts in translation practice from colonial to post-colonial societies.
* translation and power relations in Indian languages
* Brazilian cannibalistic theories in literary transfer.
Translation Theory And Practice an introduction in Tamil
Translation studies is an academic interdiscipline dealing with the systematic study of the theory, description and application of translation , interpreting , and localization. As an interdiscipline, Translation Studies borrows much from the various fields of study that support translation. These include comparative literature , computer science , history , linguistics , philology , philosophy , semiotics , and terminology. The term translation studies was coined by the Amsterdam-based American scholar James S. Holmes in his paper "The name and nature of translation studies", which is considered a foundational statement for the discipline. In the United States there is a preference for the term Translation and Interpreting Studies as in the American Translation and Interpreting Studies Association , although European tradition includes interpreting within translation studies as in the European Society for Translation Studies. Historically, translation studies has long been prescriptive telling translators how to translate , to the point that discussions of translation that were not prescriptive were generally not considered to be about translation at all.

Postcolonial Translation Summary
Bo Pettersson University of Helsinki. Arrojo, Rosemary. In Bassnett and Trivedi The Empire Writes Back. Theory and practice in post-colonial literatures.
Cultural studies brings to translation an understanding of the complexities of gender and culture. Simon : In recent years it is in fact postcolonialism that has attracted the attention of many translation studies researchers. Though its specific scope is sometimes undefined, postcolonialism is generally used to cover studies of the history of the former colonies, studies of powerful European empires, resistance to the colonialist powers and, more broadly, studies of the effect of the imbalance of power relations between colonized and colonizer. The consequent crossover between different contemporary disciplines can be seen by the fact that essays by Simon and by Lefevere appear in collections of postcolonial writings on translation, and Simon herself makes extensive reference to the postcolonialist Spivak.
