What a narrow escape we had. The partnership of those glorious clowns Morecambe and Wise almost ended before it began, according to a letter unearthed by Eric's son Gary. It was written by little Ern in , when the two were trying to make it on the variety circuit. The one with the short, fat, hairy legs told the one with the glasses that he wanted to "break up the act" because he had lost his "zip" and had pressures at home. Signed "Your Best Pal, Ernie", the letter poignantly reveals the very closeness that made their act so special: "I can't keep you waiting round for me… I feel it's a great pity after we planned so much, but my mind's made up. Eric wrote straight back telling Ernie not to be so silly, to take a rest and get back to work — which is what they did.
