Apples and Oranges: Going Bananas with Pairs by Sara Pinto

I probably liked this book because my one of my favorite jokes is this:

What do a peanut and a bicycle have in common? Neither one can play the piano! HA!

A pair of items with something obvious (but not stated) in common is shown: an apple and an orange (fruits), a starfish and an octopus (live in the ocean), pants and underwear (clothes, duh!). Each pair is followed by a depiction of what ELSE they have in common: they dont wear glasses, or work in a bank, or knit.

I read this in storytime and while the preschoolers had a little trouble catching on to the concept of figuring out what was the same about the items, once they did, they found the book quite funny. The final two pages depict a group of people, and readers are asked what they have in common. The answer starts we both dont... with no ending given.

One young boy in my group thought for moment, and then came up with this answer: We both dont eat chinchillas!

Its true! We dont!

Apples & Bananas

But there is certainly a place for familiar songs in those settings, especially where young children and their families are concerned. Familiar music creates a feeling of belonging and encourages stronger participation. If children see their parents or caregivers singing along, they are much more likely to try and do the same. I have an arsenal of favorites, and Apples and Bananas is most definitely one of them. You probably learned this song before you hit kindergarten; in fact, my two-year-old son came home singing it a few weeks ago. What are some of yours? The beginning of the school year is always a repertoire-building frenzy for me!

If you're lucky enough to live in a banana-growing climate, your farmers market or local store may well sell a variety of bananas. To those of you in less tropical climes, such variety seems like sheer madness and something to look for when you visit. What all bananas have in common is a fairly starchy texture, a mildly sweet flavor as compared to other tropical fruits, and the wonderful ability to keep ripening after they've been plucked from their trees. As tropical fruits, bananas don't care for the chill of the fridge, so it's best to store them at room temperature, where they'll continue to ripen gradually. If you want to speed things up, simply pop them in a paper bag. Have too many bananas to handle?
