Thunder & Lightning: Weather Past, Present, Future by Lauren RednissWeather is the very air we breathe—it shapes our daily lives and alters the course of history. In Thunder & Lightning, Lauren Redniss tells the story of weather and humankind through the ages.
This wide-ranging work roams from the driest desert on earth to a frigid island in the Arctic, from the Biblical flood to the defeat of the Spanish Armada. Redniss visits the headquarters of the National Weather Service, recounts top-secret rainmaking operations during the Vietnam War, and examines the economic impact of disasters like Hurricane Katrina. Drawing on extensive research and countless interviews, she examines our own day and age, from our most personal decisions—Do I need an umbrella today?—to the awesome challenges we face with global climate change.
Redniss produced each element of Thunder & Lightning: the text, the artwork, the covers, and every page in between. She created many of the images using the antiquated printmaking technique copper plate photogravure etching. She even designed the book’s typeface.

Thunderstorms are the most common extreme weather in the UK. But while they may be impressive to watch, they can potentially cause a lot of damage and it's important to be careful when the weather is stormy. Although the chances of being struck by lightning is really, really small, there are some things you can do to protect yourself during a big storm. Thunder and lightning happens when it's warmer outside. The atmosphere is unstable and clouds called cumulonimbus clouds are made.
A thunderstorm , also known as an electrical storm or a lightning storm , is a storm characterized by the presence of lightning and its acoustic effect on the Earth's atmosphere , known as thunder. They are usually accompanied by strong winds , and often produce heavy rain and sometimes snow , sleet , or hail , but some thunderstorms produce little precipitation or no precipitation at all. Thunderstorms may line up in a series or become a rainband , known as a squall line. Strong or severe thunderstorms include some of the most dangerous weather phenomena, including large hail, strong winds, and tornadoes. Some of the most persistent severe thunderstorms, known as supercells , rotate as do cyclones. While most thunderstorms move with the mean wind flow through the layer of the troposphere that they occupy, vertical wind shear sometimes causes a deviation in their course at a right angle to the wind shear direction.

A thunderstorm is a series of sudden electrical discharges resulting from atmospheric conditions. These discharges result in sudden flashes of light and trembling sound waves, commonly known as thunder and lightning. Thunderstorms are a series of sudden electrical discharges resulting from atmospheric conditions. Thunderstorms develop when the atmosphere is unstable. This is when warm air exists underneath much colder air. As the warm air rises it cools and condenses forming small droplets of water. Lightning is a huge electrical discharge that flows between clouds, from a cloud to air, or from a cloud to the ground.
Thunderstorm - A rain-bearing cloud that also produces lightning. All thunderstorms are dangerous. Every thunderstorm produces lightning. In the United States, an average of people are injured and 80 people are killed each year by lightning. Although most lightning victims survive, people struck by lightning often report a variety of long-term, debilitating symptoms. Other associated dangers of thunderstorms include tornadoes, strong winds, hail, and flash flooding.
