You finally got that Canon 5D Mark III camera you have been desiring and now you are trying to figure out how best to take advantage of all it's great new features. Here are five ways I have customized my camera to best fit my needs while shooting weddings, events and portraits. There are many different ways you can customize your camera's settings and I'd definitely encourage you to explore the camera and play with the settings to find out what works best for you. Here are the 5 settings I have changed to make an already great camera even better. While the focus of this article and accompanying screen shots are from the 5D Mark III it is also relevant to other cameras as many of these settings can be located on numerous camera models. The DOF Depth of Field button is one of those forgotten buttons that most camera users hardly ever use or even know it exists. It is located on the front of the camera by the lens mount below the shutter release button.

Composition and focusing

The changes start at the top with a locking Mode dial and the new Creative Photo button, and continue through the extensive system of revamped and redesigned camera menus. There is something to discover literally everywhere, it seems. One of the new and most impressive upgrades is the completely revamped autofocus system. There is ample opportunity for photographers to tweak focus, particularly when using AI Servo AF to track focus on subjects. The cases provide a good starting point for setting up AI Servo AF to be more responsive and accurate. Regardless of the AF mode, there is a lot of power under the hood of the new system, and it just takes time and experimentation to find the combination that works best for the subjects that you photograph most often. My most recent shooting has been nature and still-life subjects, and the camera is enjoyable to use.

The short answer is: Yes it is! The Mark III is fairly old at this point in In fact, it came out in ! That is a whopping 7 years ago. We picked ours up over 3 years ago in January Still — it holds up as we still use it to take great photos.

For point-and-shoot photography, set the camera to Scene Intelligent Auto mode and let the camera handle most of the work for you. You use these menus to set up the camera, as well as to configure and customize it to shoot the way you want it to. Here are the major categories of menus and what they do:. Live View and Movie modes each have their own dedicated Shooting menu. AF: The AF autorfocus menu has five pages devoted to listing just about every autofocus option that you would ever want to adjust. Playback: Playback has three pages of menus. You protect, rotate, erase, print, copy, resize, and process images here, set up slide shows, and more!
