An absolutely intoxicating ride. I think if I had read this even five years ago, I might not have had the same reaction--one certainly benefits from knowing >most< of the touchpoints in order to really appreciate how deeply learned, deeply lived, and deeply thoughtful is this beautiful book. I quickly ordered several other Highet books coming off of the high.

Only the chapter on Modernism slightly disappointed me. I felt that Joyce was given rather short shrift on a number of fronts and >way< too much conflated with Eliot--and I really wished that my beloved H.D. was given more attention than her rather passing dismissal in the conclusion; somewhat a product of the times, I suppose. Anyway, if it werent for those two relatively minor drawbacks, Id have given every >page< five stars....
