Big Nate is an American comic strip written and illustrated by Lincoln Peirce. Originally launched on January 6, , the comic has since inspired book collections and theatrical performances. Big Nate follows the adventures and misadventures of Nate Wright, a spirited and rebellious sixth-grader , along with his best friends, Francis and Teddy. Other characters include a variety of teachers at Public School 38 and other people and animals in the fictional town of Rackleff, Maine. Nate is portrayed as a boy with little interest in studies or conforming to standards.
Earlier this year, my second grader told me that he had a friend who only wanted to read Big Nate books during free reading time, and that his teacher had suggested he mix things up a bit. Nate Wright is an year-old sixth grader who first appeared in a cartoon strip by Lincoln Peirce in , and has since begun starring in novels interspersed with comics for young readers. Much to Francis' annoyance, Nate is often expressing the superiority of dogs to cats , because Nate is a dog lover who hates cats. Francis rebuttals with his evidence of the superiority of cats, though the evidence usually pops up by itself. Francis doesn't mind dogs nonetheless. Francis even owns a cat named Pickles , whom Spitsy , the dog of Nate's neighbor is engaged to.
