View Larger Image. Signed by Illustrator. Beren and Luthien, by J. Tolkien, published by Harper Collins in The First Edition, 1st impression of the newest release from the myths and legends of Middle-Earth, as conceived by the author. The tale of Beren and Luthien was written after the authors return from the Battle of the Somme in The story grew and changed over the years, with the developing of Middle-earth and it's intertwined history and associations.

A key foundation myth of his universe, the love of an immortal for a mere man. Painstakingly restored from Tolkien's manuscripts and presented for the first time as a continuous and standalone story, the epic tale of Beren and Luthien will reunite fans of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings with Elves and Men, Dwarves and Orcs and the rich landscape and creatures unique to Tolkien's Middle-earth. The tale of Beren and Luthien was, or became, an essential element in the evolution of The Silmarillion , the myths and legends of the First Age of the World conceived by J. Returning from France and the battle of the Somme at the end of , he wrote the tale in the following year. Essential to the story, and never changed, is the fate that shadowed the love of Beren and Luthien : for Beren was a mortal man, but Luthien was an immortal Elf.

The Lays of Beleriand 1st Ed by J. Beren and Luthien by Tolkien, J. Tolkien and Alan Lee Hardcover Book. I just love the tale of b and l and you would too if you knew it. While fantastic and tragic, it is a perfect story. Featuring characters that echo through Tolkien lore.

F or artist Alan Lee, nature has always provided a gateway to other worlds. Now 71, Lee remembers growing up in Uxbridge, on a council estate that bordered a wilder landscape. Tolkien, who died in , always intended to publish these prequels to the main Lord of the Rings trilogy. Lee first encountered Tolkien aged 17 while at Ealing Art College. A fellow student gave him a copy of the first in the Lord of the Rings sequence, The Fellowship of the Ring. I just devoured it.

After the publication of The Silmarillion in I spent several years investigating the earlier history of the work, and writing a book which I called The History of The Silmarillion. Later this became the somewhat shortened basis of the earlier volumes of The History of Middle-earth. In I wrote at length to Rayner Unwin, the chairman of Allen and Unwin, giving him an account of what I had been, and was still, doing. At that time, as I informed him, the book was 1, pages long and sixteen and a half inches across, and obviously not for publication.
