The special posthumous category was added this year to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the awards program, which honours individuals and organisations who have made a significant contribution to Queensland. Irwin headlined a class of acclaimed recipients featuring humanitarian scientist Professor James Dale, philanthropist and entrepreneur Andrew Brice, artist and benefactor Robert MacPherson, equality advocate Pat Fennell, broadcasting pioneer John Gleeson and the Queensland branch of military family supporter RSL. Irwin, popularly known as the Crocodile Hunter, was a highly respected conservationist and world-renowned television personality who was the face behind Australia Zoo, one of Queensland's most iconic tourist destinations. Daughter Bindi Irwin said she is excited to see her father's achievements in wildlife conservation being recognised.

Born in Melbourne, Australia, on February 22, , Steve Irwin grew up on a wildlife park owned by his parents and went on to become an animal enthusiast and TV personality, hosting the popular series Crocodile Hunter and appearing on major talk shows. Number five greatest accomplishment is when in his parents gave Steve the business to run the family zoo. The fourth greatest accomplishment is when Steve Irwin won a couple of Emmy Awards.
