People, Places and Things by Duncan MacMillan

PEOPLE, PLACES AND THINGS at St. Ann's Warehouse (Official Trailer)

Beauty Pageant/Trivia

Denise Gough is stunning in this powerful new play about addiction and reality from '' scribe Duncan MacMillan. It is undeniably pretty funny. Yet, for all the initial, broad black comedy and the flourishes lobbed in by director Jeremy Herrin — multiple Emmas erupting out of the walls, floor and furniture as the cold turkey bites — Gough gives a masterclass in nuance and subtlety. Emma is a self-invented woman trying desperately to be normal, to be honest. She has lost all touch with herself, self-medicating through booze, drugs and pretending to be other people.

Actor Denise Gough storms her way through a trippy addiction drama. It spends much of its two and a half hours showing us group meetings, discussing the twelve steps, and acknowledging backsliding. What we do see are the low points, which are, frequently, her highs. She reels, literally pulling the world down around her: she snatches down a scrim backdrop, revealing an entire audience on the other side. Are we looking in a mirror?

Its protagonist, the frightened and frightening Emma, is an actress, and as she works her way through rehab, we witness role-playing, rehearsals, performances, naked vulnerability, toxic egotism, and, most terrifyingly of all, the unreliability of something as basic as identity — her name, her story, who she is. And the rumors are true. She is that good. I once watched the demolition of an old sports stadium via several tons of controlled explosives. Konstantin is holding forth about his unhappiness, his inability to write, his undying love for Nina, while Nina … is losing it. Gough sways and staggers, her spine seemingly trying to exit her body.
