Simone Simca Beck first met Julia Child in 1949 in the womens cooking club Cercle des Gourmettes in Paris. Soon afterwards, the two began collaborating on what would become Mastering the Art of French Cooking.

During her extraordinary career, Simca was mentor and friend to a generation of cooks and food writers. In Food and Friends, she interweaves tantalizing recipes and menus with a wonderfully evocative account of her Normandy childhood, her madcap escapades in 1920s Paris, her work with Julia Child, and her friendships with James Beard, Craig Claiborne, M.F.K. Fisher, and Richard Olney, among others.

Simone "Simca" Beck 7 July in Normandy , France — 20 December was a French cookbook author and cooking teacher who, along with colleagues Julia Child and Louisette Bertholle , played a significant role in the introduction of French cooking technique and recipes into American kitchens. Her family was rich because they had a business in production of Benedictine liqueur. She spent some years learning bookbinding and being a sales representative, where she meet her second husband, but following Beck's career was devoted to food. In she married Jean Victor Fischbacher, keeping her maiden name as a nom de plume and professionally, but using her husband's name socially. The start of Beck's professional career as a cook and teacher was after World War II , and after joining the Le Cercle des Gourmettes , an exclusive women's culinary club.
