Bettina Rheims: The Book of Olga by Catherine Millet

We dropped in yesterday at the Otherwise Bookshop in Rome, partly to get out of a sudden thunderstorm, and found that they had a remarkable collection of books. Wed already looked at a great many of them, and were preparing to leave, when I noticed this boxed book sitting on the top shelf of the art section. I had no idea what it was but was struck by its enormous size; I have rarely seen anything as big. According to data on the web, its 21.5 x 14 x 2.8 inches and weighs 12.3 pounds.

So we opened the box and looked at the book inside. Nearly all of it consists of glossy, high-quality photographs of the eponymous Olga. Some people claim its not pornographic, but I beg to differ. If this isnt pornography, then I have trouble understanding what the word means. Its your standard porn magazine fare: Olga nude, Olga in skimpy underwear, Olga doing things with sex toys, Olga doing things with other girls, etc. If you go to Google Image Search, you can see plenty of examples. There is a short and pretentious foreword.

When we got home, I looked it up and was surprised. The book is very rare. It was printed in a limited edition of 1000 signed copies, all signed by the author/photographer, and retailed for 2000 Euros a pop. No, that is not a typo. Every copy was sold.

We called Otherwise and asked how much their copy was. Its an absolute snip at 200 Euros. We thought we might buy it as a speculative investment; Not did some research and decided it would be too hard to resell. But if youre in Rome and youre feeling more optimistic, Otherwise probably still has it sitting there on its shelf.

Whatever the reason, the paradoxical art of Bettina Rheims, who allows us to approach the most joyous excesses of colour, exhibitionism and voyeurism, the better to transport us elsewhere, into a place where eroticism is one with humour and deep humanity, is illustrated to particularly telling effect in this work.
