Batman hunts down The Joker in a desperate attempt to rescue the young girl who may or may not be the daughter of Bruce Wayne. While there are costs to embracing the idea that there can be multiple universes, a lot of comics publishers have wisely leaned into the idea that different versions of the same character can exist at the same time without conflicting with one another. Where White Knight started strong in the first issue but squandered a lot of interesting opportunities, The Dark Prince Charming displays its weakness immediately. The book is a joy to look at. There are several double-page spreads and large panels that evoke the same kind of damaged and aging art-deco city that the best episodes of Batman: The Animated Series portrayed. The book is solid, visually. The larger problem is that the dialogue is also so casually, unrepentantly, and unapologetically sexist that it completely dissolves whatever suspension of disbelief the reader may have arrived with. The story of Damian Wayne and Talia Al Ghul is a hard one to beat, and Marini is relying far too much on misogyny to carry his plot to even come close to competing with it.

The series is considered a standalone, out-of-continuity story. In a flash-forward scene, Bruce Wayne receives a gift-wrapped box. The Joker loses the pearls intended as a birthday present for Harley Quinn after jumping off a bridge. Angry at her disappointment, the Joker kills his entire gang except for a suicidal clown named Archie, whom Joker hires to find new recruits. Harley shows enthusiastic interest in a valuable diamond called the "Blue Cat". Bruce Wayne receives a paternity suit from Mariah Shelley, an alleged one-night-stand of Wayne's who claims that Wayne is the father of her highly-intelligent 8-year-old daughter Alina. The Joker hospitalizes Mariah in a car crash and kidnaps Alina, attempting to gain ransom to buy the "Blue Cat" for Harley.

It was the first part of a two volume story, the second of which was only just released this past week. It was a long wait, but finally the conclusion of the story set up months ago is finally upon us. The first volume of Marini's story quickly set itself apart from the usual Batman mythos by having an unexpected guest drop at Bruce Wayne's door. A woman with whom Bruce had been intimate with nine years ago, and who now claimed that the daughter she had was his. However, before Bruce could find out if this woman was telling the truth or not, the Joker kidnapped the young girl, and the Batman, pushed by nascent paternal feelings, scoured Gotham City with a rage that burned hotter than any we've seen in him before. Over the years, many Batman stories have cut to the heart of his relationship with the Joker.
