History of King Charles II of England by Jacob AbbottOur Prince Charles now becomes, by the death of his father, King Charles the Second, both of England and of Scotland. They would not aid him to recover his throne, but in the courts and royal palaces which he visited he was regarded as a king, and was treated, in form at least, with all the consideration and honor which belonged to royalty.

This resulted in an extended contest of wills between her and her father, who finally permitted her to marry Leopold of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld later King of the Belgians. After a year and a half of happy marriage, Charlotte died after delivering a stillborn son. Charlotte's death set off tremendous mourning among the British, who had seen her as a sign of hope and a contrast both to her unpopular father and to her grandfather, whom they deemed mad.
