Quiet Girl in a Noisy World: An Introverts Story by Debbie TungSweet, funny, and quietly poignant, Debbie Tung’s comics reveal the ups and downs of coming of age as an introvert.
This illustrated gift book of short comics illuminates author Debbie Tungs experience as an introvert in an extrovert’s world. Presented in a loose narrative style that can be read front to back or dipped into at one’s leisure, the book spans three years of Debbies life, from the end of college to the present day. In these early years of adulthood, Debbie slowly but finally discovers there is a name for her lifelong need to be alone: she’s an introvert.
The first half of the book traces Debbie’s final year in college: socializing with peers, dating, falling in love (with an extrovert!), moving in, getting married, meeting new people, and simply trying to fit in. The second half looks at her life after graduation: finding a job, learning to live with her new husband, trying to understand social obligations when it comes to the in-laws, and navigating office life. Ultimately, Quiet Girl sends a positive, pro-introvert message: our heroine learns to embrace her introversion and finds ways to thrive in the world while fulfilling her need for quiet.
This Is Why You Should Take A Chance On The Quiet Girl
Facebook recently informed me that I have had an account now for ten years: the whole of my adult life. I will be 28 in a few months, and in the past ten years I have watched, via Facebook, at least three acquaintances go through mental health crises: first, the odd syntax, then the long rants on obscure topics, the strangely-angled selfies, the unsolicited poetry, the deep silence of disappearance. In each of these cases, I did nothing. I did not reach out in support. I did not report the posts.
Starting a conversation with a girl can sometimes be challenging, especially when she is the quiet type. You don't know how she is going to respond to you because you rarely see her talking to others. Will she be interested in what you have to say? Will she try to avoid you? When talking to a quiet girl, or any girl, remember to always be courteous and polite. A quiet girl will appreciate your politeness even more because it shows that you respect her reserved personality.
Look for something you have in common.
Being a talkative person is okay, but actively listening to others is also important. Some situations, such as school and work meetings, may require you to be quiet for long periods of time.
Many people who are introverts by nature meaning they charge their batteries via solitude spend their lives pretending to be outgoing extroverts meaning people who charge their batteries by socializing. Introverts often do this just to please others, which means they are not practicing healthy self-care. Introversion is nothing to be ashamed of, as many--perhaps even most-- creative geniuses of history were introverts, but in today's world, most introverts are perceived as weird. The time, however, arrives when a person faking extroversion needs to come out as an introvert. To create this article, 40 people, some anonymous, worked to edit and improve it over time.
