Why do so many nations want a piece of Antarctica?
Antarctica is one of the last remaining unexplored places on Earth so it's no wonder theories are rife about what's really happening at the bottom of the world. From secret pyramids to hidden Nazis, and speculation about military operations, the inhospitable continent is a favourite topic of discussion for many people across the internet. For a group who call themselves the Flat Earthers, the claim by Pythagoras and Aristotle that our planet is round is absurd and they believe scientists have been deliberately misleading the public ever since. At the core of that deception? They say Antarctica is in fact a large, mostly flat plane surrounding the rest of the world, culminating in a large ice wall guarded by NASA employees. But what about the hour sunlight and darkness that we've been told Antarctica experiences every year?
But now fellow researchers have dug out satellite images of the same site, just off Willy Field Road, which were taken in April and December The channel says it found the pictures which they believe show four tanks in a line facing the strange crack in the snow on Google Earth — as if a UFO has skidded to a halt after an emergency landing. YouTube channel Third Phase of Moon has posted an online video of the finding of the images, the latest of which were taken just two months before the previously released picture, which shows the "crash site" but no tanks. The channel has previously been accused of uploading allegedly hoaxed or misleading footage, which is something it denies. Not all viewers of their new video were convinced, with one poster saying from the scale of the map the tanks would be 70 feet long - bigger than any known military tank. But speaking on the video representatives of the channel said: "Why do they have tanks around it? Mr Degterev, who says he is a "researcher of the unknown" had earlier this summer posted the images and co-ordinates online before they went viral.
Conspiracy theorists have been left gobsmacked after news surfaced of a fitness tracker app that can reportedly reveal the location of military bases around the world. Now, it is claimed there is also activity shown in the icy reaches of Antarctica, with claims it exposes an underground government base in the South Pole, Dailystar. Tyler Glockner, of YouTube channel SecureTeam10, uploaded footage using the software, appearing to show heat signatures from an isolated location in Antarctica. He said: "We have a new area of Antarctica that was discovered where — in the middle of nowhere — we had one of these heat maps. That leads me to believe is that whatever we are seeing in this heat map, it is definitely underground. You can see some of the lines here are overlapping which signifies to me there are definite multiple levels. When the clip switches to Google Earth of the same area, however, nothing can be seen apart from mountains and snow.

Parties to the Antarctic Treaty have agreed to restrict human access to 16 areas of special scientific or environmental value in Antarctica. The nation group, responsible for regulating human activity on the frozen continent, also moved closer to adopting a standard procedure for measuring the harm being done to the environment by scientists. Delegates at the 13th consultative assembly on the treaty decided to ask an independent research group to determine whether new types of protected areas should be developed. Currently, only regions deemed to be of scientific or environmental importance can be protected under the treaty, leaving other regions open to unchecked human activity. The measures were approved here Friday, at the end of the two-week conference that focused on assessing the growing environmental impact of scientific activity in Antarctica and adapting the treaty itself to a new climate of heightened Antarctic interest. The lure of mineral exploitation in Antarctica has prompted some countries to begin research activity there, while other nations have increased the scope of their existing experimentation.

The military aircraft are mostly for transportation of cargo and personnel as well as search and rescue. To keep anyone from getting onto Antarctica and finding the edge of the huge glass dome that encases the flat earth, Antarctica is guarded by millions of soldiers from all over the world.
