Authentic Happiness: Using the New Positive Psychology to Realize Your Potential for Lasting Fulfillment by Martin E.P. SeligmanA national bestseller, Authentic Happiness launched the revolutionary new science of Positive Psychology—and sparked a coast-to-coast debate on the nature of real happiness.
According to esteemed psychologist and bestselling author Martin Seligman, happiness is not the result of good genes or luck. Real, lasting happiness comes from focusing on one’s personal strengths rather than weaknesses—and working with them to improve all aspects of one’s life. Using practical exercises, brief tests, and a dynamic website program, Seligman shows readers how to identify their highest virtues and use them in ways they haven’t yet considered. Accessible and proven, Authentic Happiness is the most powerful work of popular psychology in years.

Dr Martin EP Seligman’s Authentic Happiness Test; How to Increase Your Work and Life Satisfaction
Instead of beating ourselves up about improving our lives, how about looking at what we are good at? Peterson and Seligman said that once we become aware of what our positive attributes are, we can apply them to our lives on a daily basis and make better choices, leading to greater levels of happiness and life satisfaction. The process enables us to focus on our strengths rather than our weaknesses. The importance of getting in touch with our signature strengths has been proven time and again. So if you need some help, read on. Take a look at the 24 signature strengths below. Whatever your top five, try to use one or more of them each day.
How is a profile report different than the free survey results?
When we think of psychology, we tend to think disorders, deficits and distress. Abnormal psychology automatically comes to mind. It studies three principle areas, according to Seligman: positive emotions such as happiness and hope , positive individual traits such as strength, resilience and creativity and positive institutions such as better communities, leadership and parenting.
The VIA survey isn't specifically geared toward couples looking to improve their relationship. It's a question assessment that measures you on 24 "character strengths," including creativity, honesty, and leadership. In "Happy Together," the authors who are married to each other apply the science of positive psychology to romantic relationships. Pileggi Pawelski has a master's degree from the positive psychology program at the University of Pennsylvania; Pawelski is a philosopher who teaches at the program. Positive psychology focuses on learning what helps people flourish, and the VIA survey — or the VIA Classification of Character Strengths and Virtues — is based on the research of pioneering positive psychologists Christopher Peterson and Martin Seligman. The strengths you score highest on are what positive psychologists call your "signature strengths" — the character strengths "that are most essential to who [you] are," according to the VIA website. The survey takes about 15 minutes to complete: You indicate how closely each statement describes you.
Everyone possesses all 24 character strengths in different degrees, so each person has a truly unique character profile. Each character strength falls under one of these six broad virtue categories, which are universal across cultures and nations.
