Arthur Schopenhauer was among the first 19 th century philosophers to contend that at its core, the universe is not a rational place. Inspired by Plato and Kant, both of whom regarded the world as being more amenable to reason, Schopenhauer developed their philosophies into an instinct-recognizing and ultimately ascetic outlook, emphasizing that in the face of a world filled with endless strife, we ought to minimize our natural desires for the sake of achieving a more tranquil frame of mind and a disposition towards universal beneficence. Often considered to be a thoroughgoing pessimist, Schopenhauer in fact advocated ways — via artistic, moral and ascetic forms of awareness — to overcome a frustration-filled and fundamentally painful human condition.

Arthur Schopenhauer. Clair Shores, Mich. Hollingdale as Essays and Aphorisms Harmondsworth, U. One of the leading German metaphysicians of the nineteenth century, Arthur Schopenhauer is exceptional in having had a widespread influence outside of philosophy; among his admirers may be counted such figures as Richard Wagner , Friedrich Nietzsche , Tolstoy, and Thomas Mann. Within philosophy itself, Schopenhauer is important for having broken with his Idealist contemporaries both in espousing a down-to-earth materialism and in forsaking philosophic jargon in favor of a limpid and vigorous literary style.

Schopenhauer, one of the great prose-writers among German philosophers, worked outside the mainstream of academic philosophy. He wrote chiefly in the first half of the nineteenth century, publishing Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung The World as Will and Representation , Volume 1 in and Volume 2 in , but his ideas became widely known only in the half-century from onwards. The philosopher most influenced by him was Nietzsche, who originally accepted but later opposed many of his ideas. However, he also departs radically from Kant. His dominant idea is that of the will: he claims that the whole world is will, a striving and mostly unconscious force with a multiplicity of manifestations.
