Kiss Me Kate by Cole PorterCole Albert Porter was an American composer and songwriter from Peru, Indiana. His works include the musical comedies Kiss Me, Kate (1948) (based on Shakespeares The Taming of the Shrew), Fifty Million Frenchmen, and Anything Goes, as well as songs like Night and Day, I Get a Kick out of You, and Ive Got You Under My Skin. He was noted for his sophisticated (sometimes ribald) lyrics, clever rhymes, and complex forms. He was one of the greatest contributors to the Great American Songbook.

The score of Kiss Me, Kate is a fascinating mixture of songs written for the backstage scenes and songs written to be part of The Taming of the Shrew. What qualities do you think have helped it remain popular over time? Even before I knew the plot of the show or had ever seen the production live, I could hum half of the songs found in the score.
