Two Sides of the Moon: Our Story of the Cold War Space Race by David Randolph Scott

An extraordinary book.
---Arthur C. Clarke

Space was one of the most fiercely fought battlegrounds of the Cold War, the Moon its ultimate beachhead.

In this dual autobiography, Apollo 15 commander David Scott and cosmonaut Alexei Leonov, the first man to ever walk in space, recount their exceptional lives and careers spent on the cutting edge of science and space exploration—and their participation in the greatest technological race ever—to land a man on the Moon.

With each mission fraught with perilous tasks, and each space program touched by tragedy, these parallel tales of adventure and heroism read like a modern-day thriller. Cutting fast between their differing recollections, this book reveals, in a very personal way, the drama of one of the most ambitious contests ever embarked on by man, set against the conflict that once held the world in suspense: the clash between Communism and Western democracy.

Through the mens memoirs, their courage, passion for exploration, and determination to push themselves to the limit, emerge not only through their triumphs but also through their perseverance in times of extraordinary difficulty and danger.

Two Sides of the Moon is unique among space histories. If you are looking for a balanced, interesting, and personal account of the American and Soviet space programs during the 1960s and 1970s this is it.

The near side of the Moon is the lunar hemisphere that is permanently turned towards Earth , whereas the opposite side is the far side. Only one side of the Moon is visible from Earth because the Moon rotates on its axis at the same rate that the Moon orbits the Earth — a situation known as synchronous rotation , or tidal locking. The Moon is directly illuminated by the Sun , and the cyclically varying viewing conditions cause the lunar phases. Sometimes the dark portion of the Moon is faintly visible due to earthshine , which is indirect sunlight reflected from the surface of Earth and onto the Moon. The image of the Moon here is drawn as is normally shown on maps, that is with north on top and west to the left.

On March 18 , Alexei Leonov flew halfway round the world, alone, attached to his Voskhod spacecraft only by an umbilical cord. It takes 90 minutes to orbit Earth but once outside in his 45 minutes of daylight, in the vacuum of space, his spacesuit started to balloon. When he tried to get back inside, he found that his fingers no longer reached the tips of his gloves and his boots had moved away from his feet and he could no longer get inside the experimental airlock feet first. So he had to "bleed" the gas from his spacesuit, scramble in headfirst, and then make an agonising flip inside the airlock to close the outer hatch. And he had to make this manoeuvre before the total darkness of Voskhod's minute night. He made the first space walk, but when Moscow released the photographs, the Americans pronounced them as fakes.
