Freddie. Based on the Railway Series by the REV. W. Awdry by Wilbert AwdryWilbert Vere Awdry, OBE, better known as the Rev. W. Awdry, was an English clergyman, railway enthusiast and childrens author, and creator of Thomas the Tank Engine, who starred in Awdrys acclaimed Railway Series.
The characters that would make Awdry famous, and the first stories featuring them, were invented in 1943 to amuse his son Christopher during a bout of measles. The first book (The Three Railway Engines) was published in 1945, and by the time Awdry stopped writing in 1972, The Railway Series numbered 26 books. Christopher subsequently added further books to the series.

Fearless Freddie is the eleventh episode of the tenth series. Thomas brings an old friend to the Skarloey Railway ; a grey tank engine called Freddie, though everyone knows him better as "Fearless Freddie. Thomas is quite surprised as he never knew that Freddie and Sir Handel were friends. Sir Handel tells Thomas that Freddie was "the fastest engine in the hills. Freddie had not met Skarloey or Rheneas before and he challenges them to a race. On his way to the starting line at the summit of the mountain, Freddie is concerned.
After many years of absence, Freddie returned to the Skarloey Railway. Although the reason for his absence is not stated, one can presume that Freddie was either on loan to another railway or undergoing an extensive overhaul. He and Sir Handel were close friends when they were younger. Upon returning home, Sir Handel greeted Freddie, having not seen him for years. Two engines whom Freddie did not recognise, Rheneas and Skarloey , raced into the wharf and declared themselves the fastest engines in the hills, so Freddie challenged them to a series of races up and down the mountain.
