In , a group of Irish musicians formed a band called The Chieftains that would specialize in traditional music. Now fifty years later, The Chieftains are a six-time Grammy award winning group that has popularized traditional Irish music around the world. Forty-five years since they met, the pair finally recorded and released this album, which they called The Wild Dog Rose. Maloney describes the origins of his friendship with Montague on the sleeve notes of The Wild Dog Rose :. John came up with the bright idea of The Chieftains based on his book of short stories Death of a Chieftain. From that point on, John and I became friends, through Claddagh, and during the making of The Northern Muse , which was the first spoken word album that I managed as a director and the manager of Claddagh Records.
