The story is set in the Eastside in old Los Angeles and Chato travels from his home street, Shamrock Street, to places around his neighborhood. Chato is lonely and wandering aimlessly not knowing what he wants. He feels lonely and worthless because his former gang, the Shamrocks, had been disbanded because some went to jail, others were killed, and he was the last one left.
