The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Summary
Mikael Blomkvist is an intrepid investigative reporter in Stockholm, Sweden, who has been convicted of libel against Hans-Erik Wennerstrom, a powerful business mogul. Following his trial, Blomkvist is determined to clear his name. After getting a mysterious phone call from a lawyer representing Henrik Vanger, the well-respected retired CEO of Vanger Corporation, Blomkvist meets with Vanger and learns of the mysterious disappearance 40 years earlier of Vanger's year-old grand-niece, Harriet Vanger. Blomkvist accepts the business proposition that Vanger offers him: In return for trying to solve the mystery surrounding Harriet's disappearance, Vanger will provide Blomkvist generous financial compensation in addition to proof that Wennerstrom is a crook. While Blomkvist becomes involved with the dysfunctional Vanger clan, we meet Lisbeth Salander. Salander is a year-old hacker with a photographic memory and a dragon tattoo. Salander's troubled childhood and her refusal to cooperate with mental health professionals caused her to be declared mentally incompetent as a youth.
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo 's Prologue features an unnamed man who we soon learn is Henrik Vanger getting a framed, pressed Australian flower in the mail on his birthday, November 1st. He calls Detective Superintendant Morrell and tells him about the flower. Henrik gets one of these flowers every year on his birthday. He has a total of 44 now. But he and the detective can't solve the mystery of who exactly keeps sending them. This thought makes Henrik cry. After the Prologue, a copy of the Vanger family tree is provided for the readers.
Larsson spoke of an incident which he said occurred when he was he stood by as three men gang raped an acquaintance of his named Lisbeth. Days later, racked with guilt for having done nothing to help her, he begged her forgiveness—which she refused to grant. The incident, he said, haunted him for years afterward and in part inspired him to create a character named Lisbeth who was also a rape survivor. With the exception of the fictional Hedestad, the novel takes place in actual Swedish towns. The magazine Millennium in the books has characteristics similar to that of Larsson's magazine, Expo , such as its socio-political leanings and its financial difficulties.
